How to make use of difficult spaces

According to some of the latest research conducted by Houzz.co.uk, bespoke furniture and storage is not only rising in popularity but homeowners are investing more financially in bespoke products. Especially within London, standard pieces don’t always fit aesthetic and/or practical needs.

As a multi-disciplined, bespoke, furniture designer based in London, I’ve had the privilege of finding bespoke solutions for clients faced with these dilemmas. Most commonly, examples include bespoke wardrobes, kitchen cabinetry, or basic bookcases.

But my favourite type of work is when I can create an unexpected solution to a problem which the homeowner thought there was no answer to.

I had a client last year who hired me to create a bespoke display unit in Maida Vale.

Across the room, I noticed a number of exposed pipes. After asking her plan for that side of the room, she explained that she would ideally want a desk there, but wasn’t sure how to add one, while hiding the pipes, but also including access to the boiler.

The bespoke piece I created for her, matched the bookshelf on the other side of the room but also tackles all three of her problems 1) incorporating a desk, 2) hiding the pipes, and 3) creating access to the boiler.

The desk is secured in place with hidden locking bolts and mounted on miniature high-quality castor. They are easily accessible and additionally, allow the desk to be moved away from the wall when access to the boiler needed. I was also able to build plug sockets into the design which means the homeowners can have a wireless printer in the larger drawer and still use the desk as if it was fixed in place.
